The Birthday Hat: You Say It’s Your Birthday

Thank you to everyone who makes my life brighter, just by being in it.

.
Today, I got to wear the Birthday Hat. November 4 is a great day for birthdays. I share this day with some pretty famous people including, Laura W. Bush, Doris Roberts, Mathew McConaughey, Walter Cronkite, Will Rogers, and Sean “Diddy” Combs. But, of these people, I guarantee none of them had a day like mine. You may think my day was ordinary, but to me … it was extraordinary.
.
I woke up to red roses, a sentimental card from my husband and a free pass (and gift card) to Nordstrom. I got 8 hours of sleep for the first time in months – my present from Kelsey. My work cubical was decorated in streamers, and one of my best friends in L.A. sent flowers to brighten up my work day. I received so many texts, phone calls, emails, and wall posts from some of the best people around. My Nana and Aunt called to sing, “Happy Birthday” which always takes me back to my childhood – not one year has gone by where they don’t call and sing to me. They can’t sing by the way, but they know it – and I think the fact that is makes me squeal and plug my ears only encourages them.

I had a wonderful dinner with my parents, husband and daughter tonight. I received the funniest birthday card in the mail from my sister-in-law, with a note that said, “…use this to buy something that inspires you to write”. She knows me all too well. I can’t wait to stalk the shelves at Barnes & Noble for inspiration. Another great friend took me back down memory lane with a blog post, filled with lots of birthday cheer. She’s the reason you’re reading this today – she convinced me to join Facebook. She convinced me to write a blog. You can say, she peer pressures me to do everything social media … but I’m grateful.
.
My baby brothers (who live too many states away) sent the best presents. Birthday’s are not about gifts – but they sure know how to make a big sister smile. Tonight, when I got home from work, I found a huge gift and sentimental card sitting on my kitchen table … my mother-in-law placed it there. What a surprise! I teared up reading her card, she is such an amazing woman, who is so great to me.
.
Kelsey – baby. I want you to know how special a birthday is. It is a day that God gave you life. He trusted you with us. Just like he trusted my parents with me. Always remember to hold on to the special feeling you get when it’s your birthday. It’s a good feeling – and it’s even better when shared with so many wonderful people. Mommy is blessed to be surrounded by so many people who love her. And so are you.
