My mom sent me an email today. It was a St. Patrick’s Day cartoon by Maxine. It was hilarious and it read, “If you have time to look for a four-leaf clover, then you have entirely too much time on your hands”. I loved that quote! It’s so true.
When I was little I would search and search for four-leaf clovers. I never found one. I began to think it was a hoax, like finding a pot of gold under a rainbow. Another white lie my parents used to say. But as I got older, whenever I would see a cluster of clovers, I would stop and look for the rare one.
My in-laws have a cabin up north and we go as often as we can. In the summer, hundreds of bright green clovers cover the ground. I used to love laying in a hammock, swinging back and forth, directly above these clovers. I would peek through the holes in the hammock, trying to find a four-leaf clover. Just as before, I never found one. It has been estimated that there are 10,000 three-leaf clovers for every four-leaf one. No wonder I always came up empty-handed.
Well, this year at the cabin there won’t be much time to lay around in a hammock. I’ll be chasing around a toddler. Still, it’s going to be a great tradition to share with my daughter. I can’t wait to dig through fields of clovers with her in search of the perfect lucky charm. Maybe she’ll have better luck than I did.
