The Family Hat: Playing Husband AND Wife

Anything he can do, I can do better. Right?
.
This week, and for the next 2-4 weeks, I am playing the role of husband and wife. You see – last Wednesday, my husband came home with a severe high ankle sprain. Carried by his two friends, Brandon and Barker he limped into the house after a basketball game. Professional athlete? No, he’s just a thirty-something guy who feels the need to play in a competitive basketball league with his friends. Behind his back (and a little to his face) I tell him that he’s too old for this. But nonetheless. He went to shoot the basketball during his game and he landed on another player, rolling his ankle and tearing his ligaments.
.
Not good.
.
We spent all night (well, 9pm – midnight) in urgent care. It was my second trip to urgent care in 7 days and I’m become quite the pro. I chose Marketing over Nursing, and I remembered why I did so the minute I walked in and smelt the medical “smell” that a hospital brings. I gagged a little. I must admit.
.
Needless to say, my husband is bound to the couch with his ankle elevated for the next couple weeks. We’re following doctor’s orders: RICE. Rest, ice, compression, elevation. But, when you have a baby in the house and a 1 year old birthday party right around the corner – not to mention the fact that I’m in NYC all week for a meeting – things are going to get a little tricky around here.
.
I’m doing the husband duties. Translation, yard work. Gross. I’ve never seeded grass in my life. I don’t want to start now, but what’s a girl to do? Today, I ran around doing errands for baby’s party. Now I’m getting ready to clean the house. And what’s on the agenda tomorrow you ask? Man duties. Weeds. Grass. Planting flowers. Removing dead bushes. Even (gasp!) cleaning the bathrooms. This is my husband’s job. We negotiated this in our marriage vows, so I have not cleaned a bathroom since I met him. Spoiled? You could say that.
.
I’m hoping to call on the grandparents (aka reinforcement) to help watch baby while I get all of this done. Thank goodness for my in-laws – as they helped me out tremendously today.
.
Wish me luck this eventful weed whacking weekend!
